“Come on, girl.” Sandra grabbed Paige’s shoulder, rattling her hard enough to click her teeth together. “You’re about as exciting as a wet mop. Loosen up. Have some fun.” The blond slung around until her back hit the bar and leaned there.

Loosen up. Yeah, I’ve heard that before. Paige frowned. “Drunk and disorderly isn’t fun. Haven’t you figured that out yet?” She shook her head, brushing hair away from her face to tuck it behind one ear.

“Girl, you’re no fun at all.”

“Thank you. Just what I want to hear from someone drunk off their butt.” She slipped off the bar stool and picked up her purse. “Your taxi service is leaving. Are you coming or staying?”

“Ah, man, can’t you just hang out a little while longer?”

The song changed, and the volume increased.

“You asked me that two hours ago!” Paige yelled to be heard over the cacophony. “I’m done hanging out. Are you coming or not?”

Melanie slipped an arm through one of Sandra’s and pointed to a group of guys watching them from several feet away. “Look what I found.”

Sandra’s eyes lit up, then she turned back to Paige. “Things are definitely looking up. Let’s stay, just a while longer. Pleeeease.”

Paige sighed then shook her head. “If you want to stay, fine, but I’m going home. I’ve had all the partying I can stand.” More than enough, actually. Why’d I let them talk me into this in the first place? I should’ve stayed home like I wanted.

“Come on, Sandra.” Melanie grabbed her hand and tugged her toward the guys. “They’re waiting, and we don’t want them to get bored.”

Sandra flashed Paige a smile, waved her free hand in an oddly helpless gesture, and followed Melanie.

Shaking her head again, Paige headed for the door. I can’t believe them. It’s Friday night, and none of us work tomorrow, but come on! What fun is it to spend the weekend hung over? Once was more than enough.

In minutes, she guided her car out of the nightclub parking lot, left downtown, and turned onto I-95, headed north to the home she shared with Aunt Peggy and Uncle Phillip.

A mile or two later, Paige frowned and squinted. Had a car just headed toward her? No way. They’d have to make a hairpin turn to go the wrong way on I-95.

Headlights brightened as they got closer.

He’s in my lane! Paige yanked the wheel to the right to get out of the path of the oncoming vehicle. Horror intensified when it became clear it had turned to intercept her. What’s he doing?

Metal crunched. Glass sprayed across her. Paige screamed. Pain pounded the side of her head.

Darkness fell, then receded, then fell again, only to recede once more.

She lifted a shaky hand to her pounding head. Her fingers touched something warm and slick. Her vision blurred, and darkness loomed again. Pain started elsewhere. Across her neck, shoulder, and belly where the seatbelt restrained her. Down the left side of her face and splintering across her skull. Her ears rang with agonizing intensity.
